Recently I read an article that gave me a great idea. As you know by now (if you read my last 2 blogs) one of my Lenten promises is the simple (or so I thought) act of giving up my daily diet cokes. This is done in preparation for the Resurrection! Refusing my body pleasures that I am accustomed to develops a form a discipline. The ability to intentionally say no to desires in expectation of the day of Resurrection instills a Spiritual discipline that molds the body and soul towards Christ and His will.
It really is a discipline. Each day I am consciously aware that I am choosing to NOT drink my soda…At first I was simply planning on not drinking the soda, then this new idea came to me… Each day I spend on average $2 per soda. Sometimes at lunch, sometimes at Walgreens…so this 40 days of Lent I am saving that $2 a day and at the end of Lent I will donate my savings to a local charity. Now I feel like my Lenten promise not only helps prepare me for the intentional discipline, but I will then be able to turn around and help someone else.
So my challenge to you is this. If you are one of the many who are giving up some type of consumable pleasure that you usually purchase, why not do the same. Save the money from your vanilla mocha lattes, or your m&m’s, or your beer! Put those savings aside and on Easter Sunday, donate your gift!
I’d be curious as to what it is you gave up and what you’ll be saving $$ for and who will you donate it to… Are you up to the challenge?
