This week I took my son and his friend to our local pool. While I was floating around in the cool water, I glanced over at the tennis courts. And there they were! 5 awesome ladies taking their first tennis lesson! I was so inspired! I couldn’t wait to run home and write this blog.
At first I thought it was some of the regular tennis ladies in the ‘hood, but then I looked with my weak sighted eyes and saw it was some of my buddies. I noticed earlier on facebook this week that one of them was talking about taking up tennis, and I thought “good for you”. I often find that at this stage in the parenting game, it still tends to always be about the kids. What will we sign them up for, where do I need to take them, what will they participate in…etc So when I saw my friend was thinking of taking up something new for HER, I smiled.
Flash forward to the pool. Once I realized that the group of ladies with the racquets were my friends (all of whom are beginners) I gave a shout out! “You Go Girls!” One of them shouted back that it was their first lesson. It was awesome. I couldn’t help smiling and whipped out my camera to snap a few photos. Again, when do we as moms of middle schoolers take time to pick up our own new sport? It just always seems to be about the kids. But here it was.
In plain site. MaMa’s making it their own. Brand new. Beginners. Trying something new. Taking a risk. Sweating it out at high noon on the courts. Supporting each other. Encouraging each other!!! I just love it!.
I am so not athletic! I don’t like to sweat. I don’t like to bounce. But watching this group of ladies building skills, friendships and fun, I am actually tempted to go find me a racket, a good sports bra (lol) and one of those super cute tennis skirts and head out to the courts. Thanks friends for inspiring me. Thanks for reminding me that being a mom doesn’t mean we can’t participate in a new sport. Thanks for reminding me how much fun it is to start something new with friends. I just loved seeing you all out there and can’t wait to hear how you progress! Swing away!

I agree, you need to have something just for you, with no kids in sight. I too took up tennis when we moved to Angola, I had never played much before. I am also very NON-ATHLETIC, but my Wednesday tennis matches with my fellow beginners became the highlight of my week. It truly is a sport that is fun and that you can learn at any age.
