Today I dropped my kids off at school and came home, rolled up my pajama sleeves and got busy! I pulled out a big trash can and started in the pantry. Next I moved to the famous “junk drawer” and my goodness, junk it was! I didn’t even think twice, just kept filling up the trash can. Next on to the junk-drawer-overflow-drawer! Come on, seriously? Then onto the two utensil drawe overflowing with unused Pampered Chef items that I earned as a consultant years back. Those I bagged up and will drop off at the church. Next I got down on the floor and went through the 4 cabinets of tools, extension cords, light bulbs and more. Whoo, I was exhausted but pleased! My kitchen looks…well it actually looks the same, b/c I did all the work behind the scenes. Now how it felt was a whole different story! It felt lighter, happier, cleaner. I was so proud!
Fast forward a couple of hours and guess what Oprah featured on her show today??? CLUTTER PATROL! I laughed. It’s actually a great series she is doing, check it out at www.oprah.com. Her guest was saying there is a direct link to these four items – Heart, House, Hips & Health. I believe it!
I thought I’d share some decluttering tips of my own with you. First, get yourself a hands free head set, next call you girlfriend you haven’t talked to in a while and visit while you de-crapify. I did this today with my dear friend C, we spoke for 98 minutes! It makes the time go by so fast, plus it helps you from thinking too much “should I keep this?”. I even asked her a couple of times, “should I throw this away?” Her answer was a gregarious YES!!!!
Second, after the phonecall, grab your IPOD and jam out for a bit while going to town on the cabinets. Sing along and have fun!
Third, Make piles: Keep it, Trash it, Give it, File it. This helps you have a system to get started. Most important, just get started! Remember Newton’s First Law ~ An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction. So get in motion.
Start today. One small drawer! Watch how slowly but surely you can weed out the clutter and create space for all that is waiting for you!
